REDS was appointed to decommission and remove the Camel Hill Transmitter Tower at RNAS Yeovilton, a structure that had stood since the Second World War and served as a local landmark for decades. The project involved safely dismantling and removing the wooden tower while minimising disruption and ensuring full compliance with safety standards.
Prior to works, all transmitters were fully disconnected and made safe. Two cranes were mobilised to site under an approved lifting plan, one equipped with a man-riding basket to allow operatives safe access to the mast and the second to control and lower dismantled sections to the ground.
The structure was dismantled from the top down. Each section was cut into manageable pieces and lowered safely using the crane. Once on the ground, battery-operated tools were used to reduce the sections further for efficient skip loading. All waste materials were safely disposed of via site skips in accordance with environmental requirements.
The safe removal marked the end of an era for a structure that had become a familiar sight along the A303. REDS successfully completed the project on time and without incident, ensuring a respectful removal of this historic landmark.
