Multiple Fuel Tank Installation at Military Site

REDS was appointed to undertake a military fuel tank replacement project involving two existing fuel storage tanks serving emergency generators. The existing 5,000-litre and 10,000-litre tanks had significant compliance and condition issues, including corrosion to one tank and inadequate bunding due to design flaws on the other. The project required the safe removal of the existing tanks and associated pipework, followed by the installation of new compliant tanks and connecting fuel pipework.
REDS emptied and gas-freed the existing tanks and associated pipework before removing them from site for disposal at licensed waste facilities. One tank was located in a particularly challenging position, requiring a crane lift over an existing building and onto a flatbed HGV. Temporary removal of BT telephone communication wires was coordinated to facilitate the lift safely.
The new tanks were positioned using a combination of HIAB and crane lifting operations. REDS installed new double-skinned plastic pipework between the tanks and generators, alongside tank gauges, tank alarms and positive pressure monitoring to provide improved control and early detection of potential failures.
The replacement works removed ageing and non-compliant fuel infrastructure, significantly reducing the risk of fuel loss and environmental contamination. One of the existing tanks was not fully bunded, presenting a potential pathway for fuel to escape into the surrounding environment in the event of a leak. The new tanks are fully bunded and installed to modern specifications.
The project was successfully delivered on programme, with each installation completed within the agreed two-week timeframe.
