DSEAR Compliance

What is DSEAR?
The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR) is the primary legislation for the control of substances that can cause fires and explosions in the workplace. The aim of DSEAR is to protect employees and other people who may be at risk, such as visitors to the workplace and members of the public. It complements the requirements to manage risk under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations.
DSEAR places a legal obligation on employers to assess the risk of fires and explosions that may be caused by dangerous substances in the workplace. The risk must then be eliminated or reduced as far as reasonably practicable. DSEAR legislation applies to a wide range of industrial and commercial sectors and processes. If you store or handle dangerous substances, including fuels, solvents, chemicals, gases and dusts, DSEAR applies to YOU!
Why are DSEAR risk assessments important?
A DSEAR risk assessment is designed to assist employers in planning how to eliminate or reduce the risks from dangerous substances. It is an important component of workplace safety and helps to safeguard employees, visitors and the general public from the dangers of fire and explosion. Failure to comply with DSEAR can result in severe penalties.
