Environmental Risk Ranking - What is it?

The REDS Environmental Consultancy team work closely with a range of facilities management and industrial clients across the UK to deliver a range of environmental response, site assessment, sustainable remediation and wider risk reduction strategies across site portfolios.
The Role of Environmental Risk Ranking
One of the cornerstones of environmental risk management is to understand the level of sensitivity of each site across any given built estate. REDS Environmental Consultancy promotes the use of environmental risk ranking to provide this data, providing a critical overview of potential contamination liability risks.
The information generated by our risk ranking process provides critical insight and forms a key decision-making tool when reviewing capital spending programs, or prioritising asset improvement across complex and diverse property portfolios.
The Three-Tier Risk Ranking System
We typically complete initial environmental risk ranking using a simple 3 tier ranking system:
- Assessing drift and solid geology aquifer classification
- Proximity to groundwater source protection zones
- Proximity to surface water
Each tier is scored, and the sites are then simply ranked in order of environmental sensitivity.
The initial risk ranking data can then be developed with additional tiers of information, for example using the site information regarding fuel assets present on the sites, or historical investigation information.

Supporting Capital Investment Programs
The data generated is typically used as part of the decision-making process to allow development of long-term capital improvement projects across property portfolios. Taking informed decisions to reduce potential environmental risks at the most sensitive sites in a portfolio can have immediate benefits such as reducing insurance premiums and maximising property freehold values.
How Can REDS Help?
